Stuart Broadbelt and Tony Jones

The following candidates are applying for election to the BID Board:

Alan Gent
Currently the co-owner of the award winning pub, the Petersgate Tap, Alan brings 26 years of commercial experience via his career with Shell UK Oil. Starting in computer operations, he moved into finance, running the UK accounts payable division. This was followed by spells as Operations Manager in the Fuel Cards division, contract management and finally as a project manager.

Alan sees the number of empty retail units as the biggest challenge in revitalising Stockport and creating a strong neighbourhood “vibe”.

“ Like many towns in the north, Stockport has been starved of central government funding. The BID has a good opportunity to acquire money via levy payers, but faces huge challenges in re-channeling that money into projects that will do the most for the town. As a business owner, I already have a stake in Stockport and look forward to helping to develop the towns’ future prospects.”

Andrew Ayres
I have practised as a solicitor in Stockport for over 30 years and for 26 of those years, I have run my own firm, from premises on St Petersgate. Throughout that time, I have been active in supporting the town’s third sector, having been a member of the governing boards of the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and Law Centre. For the last 3 years, I have chaired the board of directors of the Wellspring, perhaps Stockport’s best-supported charity.

Whilst aspects of the town centre have undoubtedly declined, I have witnessed first-hand and been heartened by the growth in many new and innovative businesses in and around the Market Place, the Underbanks and Hillgate. With the investment now available, and the energy and innovation of committed people, I believe that there is every reason to think that Stockport is on the brink of a very bright future.

As someone who has been watching Stockport County since the 1970s, and has witnessed the highs and the many depressing lows, I am confident that the corner has been turned, for the football team and also for the town itself.

I am committed to Stockport, and its people. I believe that there is a wealth of talent within the town, which will thrive on the support that the BID can provide. As a member of the BID Board, I believe that I would have the skills and the experience to make a valuable contribution.
